Panning for Beginners
Every mix has a width problem, and most beginner producers make it in the same direction: they pan things wide because wide sounds impressive, and they end up with a stereo image that feels exciting on headphones and collapses into mush on a phone speaker.
Panning is spatial reasoning. Before you touch a pan knob, you need a mental map of the stereo field — a left-to-right stage where every element has a position that serves the song rather than just filling space.
What Lives in the Centre
The centre of the stereo field is load-bearing. Kick drum, bass, and lead vocal belong there, not because of convention, but because of physics. Low frequencies are omnidirectional — your ears struggle to locate them spatially, so a panned bass sounds thin and unbalanced rather than interestingly wide. The kick needs to anchor the track from a single point of gravity. The lead vocal is the focal point of almost every song in almost every genre; moving it off-centre splits the listener’s attention without giving them anything worth looking at.
Snare typically sits centre too, though producers sometimes shade it slightly to taste. The same goes for any melodic element that carries the primary hook — a lead synth, a riff that defines the track. The rule isn’t “put boring things in the middle.” It’s “put the most important things where the ear looks first.”
The Middle Ground
Rhythm guitars, keyboards, and backing vocals live in the zone between centre and edge — somewhere in the range of 30 to 70 percent either side, depending on the arrangement. The classic rock move of doubling a guitar part and panning each take hard left and hard right works because the two performances are never quite identical; the tiny differences between them create a natural width without sacrificing mono compatibility.
When you pan something, pan its mirror image. A Rhodes chord voicing sitting at ten o’clock needs something at two o’clock — not necessarily the same sound, but something with similar weight and frequency content. Asymmetry reads as a mistake unless it’s deliberate and controlled. Listeners feel an unbalanced mix as a vague wrongness even when they can’t name it.
The Edges
Percussion elements — tambourine, shaker, hi-hats if you’re spreading a drum kit across the field — and effects like reverb returns and delay throws can live further out. These sounds add dimension and air. Because they’re rhythmically or tonally secondary, their position doesn’t confuse the listener’s focus; it deepens the sense of space around the central elements.
Treat the hard left and hard right positions with some restraint. Full-width placement of prominent elements can feel thrilling in isolation and exhausting over the length of a track. The edges are seasoning, not the main course.
Why Headphones Lie
Here is the thing nobody warns you about early enough: headphones and speakers do not reproduce stereo the same way. On speakers, the left channel bleeds into your right ear and vice versa — a phenomenon called crossfeed. This means a sound panned hard left still reaches your right ear, slightly delayed and slightly quieter. Your brain uses this information to place the sound naturally in space.
On headphones, there is no crossfeed. Left is only left. Right is only right. The stereo field is projected directly inside your skull rather than out in front of you, which makes panning feel more dramatic and more extreme than it actually is. A guitar panned to sixty percent feels like it’s at the edge of the universe. Bring that mix to a speaker system, or a car stereo, or a Bluetooth speaker at a party, and the same guitar suddenly feels cautious and close.
This is why checking your mix on multiple playback systems matters — not as a finishing touch, but as a regular part of the process. If you only ever mix on headphones, you are solving a puzzle while looking at a different picture than your listeners will see.
The mono check is your most honest tool. Collapse your stereo mix to mono and listen. If elements disappear, thin out, or suddenly clash in ways they didn’t before, your panning is creating phase problems that the stereo field was hiding. A mix that survives the mono check isn’t a compromise — it’s a mix with integrity.
Panning isn’t decoration. It’s architecture. The decisions you make about where each element lives in the stereo field shape how the listener experiences the arrangement, the dynamics, and the emotion of the track. Get the centre right first, and the width will take care of itself.
