The History of the Sampler

When the Beatles fed tape loops of flutes and strings through a Mellotron on Strawberry Fields Forever, they weren’t just reaching for an unusual texture. They were doing something philosophically strange: playing recordings as if they were notes. One instrument performing the ghost of another. The idea seems ordinary now. In 1966, it was a kind of witchcraft.

The sampler’s history is usually told as a hardware timeline — Mellotron to Fairlight to MPC to software. But that framing misses what actually changed. The real story is about who got to make music, and on whose terms. Every generation of sampling technology didn’t just open new sonic possibilities; it redistributed creative power. Sometimes toward artists, sometimes toward engineers, sometimes toward teenagers in bedrooms. The machine changed, and so did the person behind it.

Tape and the Illusion of the Orchestra

The Mellotron arrived in the early 1960s as something between a novelty and a revelation. Inside its wooden cabinet sat a bank of magnetic tape strips, each one a short recording of a real instrument — strings, flutes, choirs, brass. Press a key, and a playback head pressed against the corresponding strip. Release it, and a spring pulled the tape back to the start.

It was crude by any engineering standard. The tapes degraded. The tuning wandered. Playing legato was practically impossible. And yet the Mellotron’s limitations became its character. That wavering, slightly mournful quality — that sense of strings heard through fog — became one of the defining textures of late-sixties and seventies rock. The Moody Blues built entire albums around it. Robert Plant once said it sounded like the end of the world. King Crimson’s early records would be unimaginable without it.

But the Mellotron was not a democratic instrument. It was expensive, physically enormous, and mechanically temperamental. You needed a roadie dedicated solely to keeping it operational. It remained the property of well-funded rock bands and progressive outfits with record deal money. The idea it represented — capturing real sounds and playing them back as music — was radical. The technology itself was exclusive.

The Computer Enters the Room

The Fairlight CMI — Computer Musical Instrument — arrived in 1979 and changed everything, at least for those who could afford it. Designed by Peter Vogel and Kim Ryrie in Sydney, it was among the first instruments to digitally sample audio and allow a musician to play those samples across a keyboard at different pitches. You could record anything — a breaking glass, a dog bark, a human voice — and then perform with it chromatically.

The Fairlight’s price tag was roughly equivalent to a luxury car, sometimes more. Its users were the established elite of the music world: Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Stevie Wonder, Trevor Horn. Gabriel used it to create the extraordinary textural worlds of Peter Gabriel III (the so-called Melt album) and beyond. Bush built the orchestral drama of The Dreaming around it. Horn deployed it as a production weapon on records for ABC and Frankie Goes to Hollywood that sounded like nothing else on British radio.

This was sampling as high art and high cost. The Fairlight didn’t democratise music — it gave extraordinary tools to already-extraordinary careers. What it did was prove the concept. It demonstrated that digital sampling wasn’t a gimmick but a genuine compositional medium. It laid philosophical groundwork that cheaper machines would later build upon.

The Emu Emulator and the Roland S-series followed in the early eighties, bringing prices down significantly. By the mid-eighties, a professional sampler was within reach of a serious independent musician rather than only a signed artist with a major budget. The circle was beginning to widen.

Hip-Hop Rewrites the Rules

While the music industry was watching Fairlight users craft studio opuses, something else was happening in the South Bronx. DJs like Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa had already invented a new relationship with recorded music — not playing it, but manipulating it, extending it, transforming it into raw material. The breakbeat, isolated and looped on two turntables, was sampling’s first street-level theory.

The Akai MPC60, released in 1988 (building on the earlier work of Roger Linn and his Linn 9000), put this idea into a box. A sampler, a sequencer, and sixteen velocity-sensitive pads in one unit. You could chop a break, assign its fragments across the pads, and perform new rhythms from pieces of old recordings. It was physically intuitive in a way that keyboard-based samplers had never been for rhythm-focused music.

The MPC became the central instrument of hip-hop production through the late eighties and nineties. J Dilla’s relationship with the MPC3000 is almost mythological — he used it to create rhythms with a deliberately imprecise, human-falling feel that theorists later tried to codify as “Dilla feel.” Pete Rock, DJ Premier, RZA, Large Professor: the whole canon of golden era hip-hop runs through this machine. Dr. Dre’s move from the Compton gangsta sound of the late eighties into the sprawling, funk-excavating productions of The Chronic was inseparable from what the MPC made possible.

What hip-hop did to sampling was conceptually seismic. It treated the existing recorded archive as an instrument bank. James Brown’s drummer Clyde Stubblefield became, through his breaks, one of the most sampled humans in music history — mostly without credit or payment, a legal and ethical crisis the industry is still processing. The question of what sampling means — appropriation, homage, theft, transformation, collage — got asked loudly during this era, partly in courtrooms.

The Biz Markie case in 1991, and the subsequent shift toward mandatory sample clearance, changed the economics of hip-hop production almost overnight. Suddenly, using recognisable samples cost money that independent artists didn’t have. This pressure pushed producers toward either paying clearance fees (if they had label backing), making samples unrecognisable through heavy manipulation, or reaching deeper into obscure crates for source material that rights holders were unlikely to pursue.

The Laptop Dissolves the Machine

Through the nineties, the price of sampling technology kept falling. The Roland SP-808, the Boss SP-202, early software like Recycle and Acid Pro — each generation made the tools more accessible and more portable. But it was the combination of the laptop computer, cheap audio interfaces, and software environments like Ableton Live, Logic, and FL Studio that finally broke the sampler free from its status as a discrete, expensive object.

By the early 2000s, a teenager with a secondhand computer could sample, chop, pitch-shift, time-stretch, layer and sequence audio in ways that would have required a room full of hardware a decade earlier. The software didn’t just replicate the MPC — it extended it beyond recognition. You could manipulate samples with surgical precision. You could stretch a two-second clip into a thirty-second drone without artefacts. You could run dozens of sample layers simultaneously.

The bedroom producer became a real category, not a condescending label. Artists like Flying Lotus, whose early work came out of home recording with software samplers steeped in the MPC aesthetic he’d absorbed from his family connection to Coltrane and the broader jazz and hip-hop world, demonstrated that the most sophisticated contemporary music was being made without studios, engineers, or label advances.

Burial’s Untrue, released in 2007, is a useful landmark. A record made largely on a consumer laptop using pirated software and cheap speakers, it became one of the most critically lauded albums of its decade. Its textures — smeared vocal samples, decomposed rhythm, rain and static and urban loneliness — would have been impossible to achieve with a Mellotron or even an MPC without additional processing. The laptop was the instrument. The bedroom was the studio. The archive of recorded sound — vinyl rips, YouTube audio, field recordings — was the orchestra.

What the Sampler Actually Changed

There’s a tempting narrative where the sampler’s history is one of steady, linear democratisation — prices fell, access widened, everyone won. The truth is messier. Each new generation of tools created new gatekeepers even as it dismantled old ones. When sampling required a Fairlight, the gatekeepers were record labels with budgets. When it required an MPC and crate-digging knowledge, the gatekeepers were the cultural insiders who knew which records to dig. When it required a laptop, the gatekeepers became platforms — streaming algorithms, social media discovery, playlist curators — with their own logics of exclusion.

The sampler also changed what composition means. The classical model of music-making imagined a composer translating inner visions into notation, which performers then realised. The sampler inserted recorded reality directly into that chain. A hip-hop producer isn’t transcribing anything — they’re sculpting with existing cultural material, finding relationships between sounds that already exist in the world. This is closer to photography than to classical composition, or closer to montage filmmaking than to either. The vocabulary we have for talking about music-making often doesn’t fit.

And the sampler changed what counts as an instrument. The Mellotron was clearly a keyboard instrument that happened to use tape. The Fairlight was a sophisticated computer you played like a keyboard. The MPC was a performance surface for recorded material. Ableton Live is… what, exactly? A sampler, a sequencer, an arranger, a mixer, an effects processor, a compositional environment. The category has dissolved. The instrument is whatever you make of it.

They’re moments in the ongoing argument about what music is for — and who it belongs to.

The answer the sampler keeps returning is: anyone with something to say. The tools will find their way to them eventually. They always have.
