Five EQ Moves That Fix Almost Anything
EQ is the most overused and most misunderstood tool in mixing. People reach for it reflexively — adding brightness here, boosting low end there — and end up with mixes that are dense, fatiguing, and somehow still not quite right. Most EQ problems are not problems of missing frequencies. They are problems of too many frequencies, in the wrong place, fighting each other. The five moves below are not tricks. They are the decisions that experienced mixers make on almost every session, because the same handful of problems come up again and again.
1. High-Pass Everything That Isn’t Carrying the Bass
Every track in a session is generating low-frequency energy, whether you can hear it distinctly or not. A vocal recorded in a treated room still has energy below 100Hz. An acoustic guitar has rumble from the performer’s movement, the microphone stand, the building’s ventilation system. A synthesizer pad may have sub content that was never intended to be there. Individually, none of these are a problem. Stacked across twelve, twenty, forty tracks, they create a fog that sits below the music and muddies everything above it.
A high-pass filter removes this. Set it at the lowest frequency the instrument actually needs to occupy — typically around 80–100Hz on vocals, higher on things like tambourines or room mics, lower on bass guitar or kick drum (where you may not want it at all). The filter doesn’t need to be dramatic. The point is not to make the instrument sound thinner; it’s to give the bass instruments exclusive control over that part of the spectrum.
When not to do it: Bass guitar, kick drum, and floor tom are the obvious exceptions. Also be careful with piano in a sparse arrangement — a solo piano piece may need its full low-frequency weight intact. And if you’re working on something that’s deliberately lo-fi or warm, aggressive high-passing can strip out character you actually want.
2. Cut the Mud Around 250Hz
The frequency range between roughly 200Hz and 350Hz has a way of accumulating across a mix like sediment. Each instrument that lives in the midrange — guitars, keys, vocals, snare — contributes something here. When those contributions stack, the mix starts to sound thick in an unflattering way. Not warm. Not full. Muddy. Like the music is being played from behind glass.
A narrow cut of 2–4dB somewhere in the 200–350Hz range on the offending instruments clears this almost immediately. You’ll hear the mix open up and the low-mids become more defined. On electric guitars especially, cutting here makes the instrument feel tighter and less boxy without touching the fundamental tone. On vocals, a small cut around 250–300Hz often reduces the slightly honky quality that shows up in certain recording environments.
The key is to sweep to find the specific problem frequency rather than applying a fixed number. Every recording is different. Move a broad cut slowly through that region while the track plays in context, and you’ll hear the spot where the mud is worst. Cut there.
When not to do it: On tracks that are supposed to provide warmth and body — a vintage Fender Rhodes, a double bass, certain acoustic guitars in a folk arrangement — cutting here can leave the instrument sounding thin and cold. Context matters enormously. If the mix already has good low-mid separation, don’t cut just because the guideline says to.
3. Tame the Harshness at 2–4kHz
Somewhere between 2kHz and 4kHz is where mixes become tiring to listen to. This range is where the human ear is most sensitive — it’s the frequency range where speech intelligibility lives, and our auditory system is wired to pay attention to it. That sensitivity works against us in mixing. Energy that accumulates here becomes fatiguing fast. A mix that’s loud and bright in this region will have listeners reaching for the volume knob after five minutes without quite knowing why.
Vocals frequently push into 3kHz in ways that feel slightly aggressive. Snare drums can cut through here to the point of being physically unpleasant. Distorted guitars, picked acoustic guitars, and certain synthesizer sounds all have resonances in this zone that seem fine in isolation but stack into something harsh in a full mix.
A gentle, wide cut of 1–2dB somewhere in the 2–4kHz range on the most prominent offenders can transform a mix’s long-term listenability without noticeably changing the character of individual sounds. This is a move that’s hard to hear on a short listen but obvious over time.
When not to do it: Cutting too aggressively here removes the presence that makes a mix feel alive and upfront. Certain styles — rock, metal, aggressive electronic music — rely on energy in this range as part of their character. And if you’re working on a track that already feels distant or recessed, this cut will push it further back. Add before you cut if presence is missing.
4. Add Air Above 10kHz
A high shelf boost above 10kHz is one of the few genuinely additive moves that tends to improve rather than complicate a mix. At these frequencies, sounds become less like distinct instruments and more like texture — a sense of openness, detail, and space. Boosting here doesn’t make things louder in the way a midrange boost does. It makes them feel more present, more real, more like they exist in air.
On vocals, a gentle high shelf above 10kHz adds shimmer without adding harshness. On overheads and room mics, it brings out the sense of the recording space. On a full mix bus, it can make a track feel more expensive without obviously changing what’s happening in the arrangement.
The amount matters. A boost of 2–3dB is usually enough. More than that and you start introducing harshness, especially if the source material has noise or distortion at high frequencies. Use a gentle shelf rather than a peak, and be aware that this range is where vinyl mastering rolls off, where streaming compression can introduce artifacts, and where older ears stop hearing clearly — not every listener will perceive this the same way.
When not to do it: If a recording has tape hiss, microphone self-noise, or high-frequency distortion, a high shelf boost will amplify all of it. Check for noise before reaching for air. Also, in lo-fi or vintage contexts, brightness at these frequencies can work against the aesthetic you’re going for.
5. Cut Rather Than Boost
This is less a specific move than a philosophy that changes how you approach every EQ decision. The instinct when something is wrong is to find what’s missing and add it. But most of the time, what sounds like a missing quality is actually a masking problem — one frequency range is so dominant that it’s obscuring another. The solution isn’t to add what seems to be missing. It’s to reduce what’s in the way.
A vocal that sounds like it lacks top end may simply have too much low-mid buildup masking the air that’s already there. A kick drum that sounds like it has no punch may have too much low frequency bloom obscuring the transient. A guitar that sounds dull may be competing with another instrument at the exact frequency where its brightness lives.
Cutting is also safer. Boosting increases gain, which affects headroom, which requires compensating elsewhere in the gain structure. Cutting removes energy and gives the mix more room to breathe. The practical habit is this: before you boost, spend sixty seconds asking whether something else could be cut instead to achieve the same result. More often than not, the answer is yes, and the outcome is cleaner.
When not to do it: Sometimes something really is missing. A vocal recorded through a poor microphone may genuinely need a top-end boost because the frequency content was never captured. Subtractive EQ has limits. If you’ve removed everything that could possibly be masking and the quality you want still isn’t there, the source may not contain it, and a boost is the honest answer.
None of these moves will save a badly recorded track or fix an arrangement problem. EQ works on what’s there — it can’t invent separation, it can’t create space that doesn’t exist, and it can’t compensate for an instrument that was recorded too close to a wall or with the wrong microphone in the wrong room. What it can do, applied with patience and in context, is give every element in a mix its own place to live. That’s the actual goal: not a track that sounds impressive on its own, but a collection of sounds that can all be heard at once.
