About this frequency

Stage Three Sleep

3 Hz falls in the heart of the delta brainwave range — the slowest oscillation pattern the brain produces, dominant during stage three non-REM sleep. This is the deepest and most physically restorative phase of the sleep cycle, when the body releases growth hormone, repairs tissue, consolidates memory, and strengthens the immune system.

A study on binaural beats at 3 Hz demonstrated that exposure to this frequency induced measurable delta activity in the brain and lengthened the duration of stage three sleep. This is significant because deep sleep declines naturally with age — by middle age, many people get far less delta sleep than they need, contributing to slower recovery, impaired memory consolidation, and reduced immune function.

Because 3 Hz is far below the threshold of human hearing (approximately 20 Hz), it cannot be played as a direct tone. Instead, this page uses binaural beat technology: your left ear receives a tone at 148.5 Hz while your right ear receives 151.5 Hz. Your brain perceives the 3 Hz difference between them and begins to synchronise with it — a process called frequency following response. Stereo headphones are essential for this effect to work.
