Ten Mistakes in Every First Mix
1. Too Much Low End
The reason this happens is almost always the room. Small, untreated spaces build up bass frequencies in unpredictable ways, so what sounds full and warm on your monitors is actually a muddy wall of low-end energy. You compensate by adding more, because you can’t hear what’s already there.
The fix is threefold: treat your room even minimally, check your mix on headphones regularly, and use a spectrum analyser not to mix by eye, but to catch what your ears are missing. A well-balanced mix often looks surprisingly thin in the sub region when you first see it.
2. Not High-Pass Filtering Everything That Isn’t Bass
Every instrument that isn’t carrying your low-end foundation — guitars, synths, vocals, pianos, even snares — is producing low-frequency content you can’t hear but absolutely can feel. It accumulates. By the time you’ve layered eight tracks of it, your mix is congested below 100Hz and you don’t know why.
High-pass filtering isn’t about removing something you can hear. It’s about removing something you can’t. Set a gentle high-pass on almost everything and roll off below wherever the instrument actually lives. The mix suddenly has space it didn’t seem to have before.
3. Reverb on Everything
Reverb feels like depth. Beginners reach for it because a dry mix sounds clinical, almost confrontational — like a room with no furniture. The instinct to soften and blur everything is understandable.
But reverb on every element destroys the front-to-back perspective you were trying to create. When everything is wet, nothing has distance — it’s just smear. The discipline is to decide which elements live in the room and which are right in front of you. Dry, close, present vocals against lush, distant pads is a relationship. Everything at the same depth is just soup.
4. Mixing in Solo
The solo button is seductive. You hear every detail, every flaw, every nuance. So you fix them — the subtle distortion on the guitar, the slightly nasal quality in the midrange of the synth, the tail of the snare that seems too long. Then you unsolo everything and the fixes have made the mix worse.
Elements that sound imperfect in isolation often sit perfectly in context. The guitar distortion was cutting through a frequency range that needed occupying. The nasal synth midrange was the only thing stopping the mix from sounding thin. Mix in context, almost always. Solo only to diagnose a specific problem, then return to the full picture to check whether your solution actually works.
5. No Automation
A static mix is a flat mix. Real music breathes — it builds, drops, intensifies, retreats. A fader set at a fixed position treats a verse and a chorus as the same emotional event, which they’re not.
Even a single piece of volume automation — pulling a vocal down by 1.5dB during the most crowded bars, or riding up a guitar lead just before the hook — transforms a mix from a photograph into something that moves. You don’t need complex automation to start. Just ask yourself, at every moment in the track, whether every element is at the right volume for this moment specifically.
6. Levels That Are Too Hot Before the Bus
When you’re excited about a track, you push faders up. Everything sounds better loud, so everything goes louder, until your master bus is clipping and you’ve normalised to a ceiling you can’t mix beneath without the whole thing collapsing.
Gain staging matters from the start. Keep your individual tracks low enough that your master bus is hitting somewhere around -6 to -12 dBFS on average. You preserve headroom for dynamics, for compression to work as it’s supposed to, and for a mastering engineer — or a limiter — to do their job properly at the end.
7. Ignoring the Mid-Range
Most beginners fight on two fronts: bass and highs. The low end is boomy, the top end is harsh or dull, and the solution is always EQ at the extremes. The midrange — roughly 500Hz to 4kHz — goes untouched, and so it gets congested.
The midrange is where almost everything lives: the body of a vocal, the bite of a snare, the presence of a guitar, the definition of a piano. When too many elements occupy the same mid-range frequencies, none of them are intelligible. Learning to carve space in the mids — small dips here, gentle boosts there, careful attention to what frequency each element needs to own — is what separates a mix that’s clear from one that’s merely loud.
8. Compression That Kills Dynamics
The misconception is that compression is a tool for making things louder and more consistent. So beginners apply heavy ratios and fast attack times, and everything that had life and movement becomes flat and fatiguing. The kick loses its punch. The vocal loses its drama.
Compression is most powerful when you can barely hear it doing anything. Slow attack times let the initial transient through, preserving impact. Moderate ratios control the dynamic range without strangling it. The goal, most of the time, is not to eliminate peaks but to subtly manage them — to keep something controlled enough to sit in the mix while leaving enough variation that it still feels like a performance.
9. Never Referencing Against Other Music
After two hours inside a mix, your ears have adapted to its particular character. What was harsh seems normal. What was dull seems balanced. You lose the ability to hear it clearly, and you start making decisions based on a distorted perception of what you’re listening to.
Referencing — switching between your mix and a professionally mixed track in a similar genre — resets your ears. It’s not about copying someone else’s sound. It’s about reminding yourself what a finished mix actually sounds like, so you can calibrate your judgments against something reliable. Do it throughout the session, not just at the end when you’ve already made all your decisions.
10. Skipping the Mono Check
A mix that sounds wide and beautiful in stereo can fall apart completely in mono — and mono still matters. Phones, laptops, Bluetooth speakers, club PA systems in certain configurations: all of them collapse your stereo field, and phase cancellation can cause elements to disappear entirely when they do.
Fold your mix to mono regularly, especially after adding stereo widening, chorus effects, or heavy panning. If a key element — a bass, a lead vocal, a central synth — vanishes or becomes thin when you switch, you have a phase problem that will hurt you in the real world. Catching it in the session is painless. Discovering it after release is not.
Mixing is not a talent. It’s a set of habits, and every one of these mistakes is just a bad habit that hasn’t been examined yet. The moment you start catching them in real time — hearing your own low-end buildup, reaching for the solo button and stopping yourself, pulling up a reference before you’ve convinced yourself the mix is done — is the moment the quality of what you make starts to change.
